In May, the internet company Google traditionally showcases the services and features it plans to release over the next twelve months at its developer conference, I/O. Only this time, Google had already previewed many innovations on artificial intelligence (AI), Android, smartphones, and research in the weeks prior.

All of this year's innovations revolve around AI, and the competition there with OpenAI , Perplexity, and Meta is so fierce that Google couldn't wait for its own developer conference. "We want to get the best models into your hands as quickly as possible," commented Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

The I/O conference is aimed at professional developers, and Google had already introduced the new Android a few weeks ago. Nevertheless, Pichai showcased an innovation that will transform Google's core product, internet search: "AI Mode," Google's vision of a new search engine, with which the company hopes to reclaim the successes of Perplexity and ChatGPT in the field of AI-assisted web research.
